What Is Qigong?

Qigong is a combination of two ideas:

  • 气 Qi = vital energy

  • 功 Gong = work

"气功" (qì gōng). The first character "气" (qì) is a very important concept in traditional Chinese culture, and it is often translated as "energy" or "life force". The second character "功" (gōng) means "work" or "skill", so together "气功" (qì gōng) can be translated as "energy work" or "energy skill"

The vital energy that flows through all things in the universe called "Qi" is combined with "Gong" which is the skill of working with, or cultivating, self-discipline and achievement.

Qi Gong is a form of Chinese exercise that involves breathing techniques, physical movements, and meditation to enhance the flow of qi, or vital energy, in the body. Research has suggested that practicing Qi Gong can have a positive impact on the brain in several ways.

One study found that practicing Qi Gong for six months resulted in increased gray matter density in areas of the brain responsible for attention and sensory processing. Another study found that practicing Qi Gong improved cognitive function and memory in older adults.

Additionally, practicing Qi Gong has been shown to decrease stress and anxiety, which can have a positive impact on the brain and overall health. One study found that Qi Gong practice was associated with reduced stress-related changes in the brain, including decreased activity in the amygdala, a part of the brain involved in the stress response.

Overall, the research suggests that practicing Qi Gong can have a positive impact on the brain by improving cognitive function, increasing gray matter density, and reducing stress-related changes in the brain.

Medical Qigong therapy is one of the eldest therapeutic modalities of Chinese medicine. It is a comprehensive system of health care addressing the root cause of symptoms or disease, and treats the client as a whole.

There are probably thousands of different styles of Qigong. Hans-Thomas Is trained in Chan Si Gong, Ba Gua, Tian Gang, Wu Xing, dao yin and is constantly learning new styles.

Each style of qigong has its own unique set of movements, breathing techniques, and philosophical principles. Some styles focus on health and healing, while others emphasize martial arts applications or spiritual development.

In contrast Tai Ji or Tai Chi 太極 characters do not contain the work “qi” as commonly believed. The first character 太 (tài) means "great" or "supreme," while the second character 極 (jí) means "ultimate" or "extreme." Together, the term 太極 (tài jí) refers to the concept of the ultimate polarity and balance in the universe, often translated as "Supreme Ultimate" or "Great Extreme." This concept is central to the philosophy and practice of Tai Ji Quan or Tai Chi Chuan, a martial art and exercise system that emphasizes relaxation, mindfulness, and cultivation of internal energy.
